Typhoon Ondoy

It’s September 28. Two days after typhoon Ondoy’s visit to the Philippines.
Ondoy (Ketsana) left millions from Luzon homeless, took away hundreds of lives and caused pain to all Filipinos (oh well, except for one bitch Jacque Bermejo who said that “buti na lng am hir in dubai! maybe so many sinners bak der! so yeah deserving wat hapend!”. One insensitive bitch. Never go back to the Philippines. Ingrata ka.
Typhoon Ondoy has affected us and forever will haunt us. I wonder how Filipinos can recover from this?
But knowing Filipinos, we can and we always have reasons to thank God, we choose to praise God and we would never question God.
I am thankful that my family was spared from this but my heart goes out to those who were affected, who are now homeless, especially to those who lost loved ones during the typhoon.
It is too early to say that ‘life must go on’. My heart still ache every time I see pictures or hear news related to Ondoy.

Wardrobe Make-over Surprise

I just sent an email to a popular local magazine asking if I can get a free make-over. I told them that I am a person you can call ‘PLAIN’ – nothing striking about me. I can settle with jeans, shirts and flip-flops. I told them that my preference on clothes has gotten worse over the past year since I no longer leave home for work. I want a make-over because I want to let the world know that one can be still look and feel fabulous even if they are just at home.

And just moments after I sent the email I got a notice that I received a $500 giftcard from Talbots! I went crazy checking for things on their site so I can maximize the $500.
I am a wide reader, my vocabulary do not do justice to it though. I easily remember photos but not words so my vocabulary hasn’t grown for the like, 10 years already? I would check new clothes and accessories in most sites and crazy it may seem but I enjoy the daily confessions in Red Chair Confessions so I want to covet things they post on their site. I used to think, “oh…if only I could!” but now that I have $500 to splurge on things for myself, I guess I don’t need to feel guilty, right?
To start with, I need new pairs of new shoes – flats and boots. I can not wear heels with a little girl tagging along with me so I definitely need new flats and boots when I’m on a girl’s night out.

Bowtie Flats $54.99 – I always wanted to get one of these from a local brand but I always put off buying since local shoes do not always survive my feet.
Wingtip boots $179.99 – I could not find of these locally. I need these when I go out alone, to add more flair to my outfit.
Tumbled Hobo Bag $179 – I need a trendy bag but big enough for my little girl’s needs like milk bottle and stuff.
Enamel Bracelet $49 to complete the get-up. I am so in love with bracelets that I can not leave home without it!
That’s it! How about you, what will you buy from Talbots if you were given $500 gift card?

Sinigang or Nilaga?

I cooked dinner last night, a very unusual thing for a no-kitchen person like me. I bought “buto-buto” from the backbone portion of the pig and petchay to complete the ingredients. I was so excited that I prepared extra rice for hubby’s additional servings. I was so confident that he’ll love my sinigang heehee
I texted him immediately that I made dinner and was so proud and was even thrilled when he told me that he was so excited to go home.
He arrived late, around 10:50PM and was eager to eat his dinner. He enjoyed it I suppose but commented that it was nilaga, not sinigang. LOL
Sorry I ran short of the ‘pampa-asim’.
He enjoyed it nonetheless ;-)

The Truth about Autism: A Seminar

Years ago, autism was a very delicate issue. Though the public already know about autism, no one was brave enough to accept that they are dealing with autism issues everyday.

Autism is a brain development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.
More and more people are properly understanding autism these days, it’s meaning, characteristics of people with autism, classification, causes, diagnosis, prognosis, management and more. Thanks to endless researches and studies and for advocates who are willing to share their knowledge on this very special condition.
On September 26, 2009 Kidsahoy will hold a parenting exchange on autism entitled “The Truth About Autism”. Let us all learn from the Speaker Grace Luna Adviento, VP of the Autism Society of the Philippines.

Real Pearls at a Discount

Pearls add enormous elegance to any outfit. You can wear it in the morning or night, during meetings and normal day or night outs and still feel glamorous. Pearls is one gift that no girl could say ‘no’ to. It is one perfect gift for any occasion.
This has become a craze – an overrated one in my own honest opinion, that everyone is going gaga over it and would try to wear even the fakes one. Wearing a fake set of pearls is such a no-no for our family. Grandmother would always say that wearing a fake set of pearls would bring bad luck to the entire family, so I vowed not to wear a fake one. Why wear fake pearls when you can get real pearl jewelry at very reasonable prices?
I am getting the one pictured above, don’t you think it’s fabulous? It is a beautiful set made from 9-10mm pearls in elegant design with a pair of cubic zirconium diamonds! Its settings are base metal with an 18k white gold overlay. Such a real steal at $17.99!

Waste! Waste! Waste!

I was saddened to know that the International Coastal Cleanup is over. It is an event where companies invite individuals to clean the Manila Bay. Technically Manila Bay is really a wonderful site, it has been part of Philippine History as a witness to thousands of very important events.
This is Manila Bay then:

After so many years, Manila Bay can now be called a dump site. More and more people couldn’t care less. They live and throw everything in Manila Bay making it an eyesore to everyone who passes there. I do not know why some people do not care. As early as now we teach our daughter proper disposal and at the tender age of 4 she would already ask why rivers are now black and oceans are now dirty. She is really concerned about the environment.
This is Manila Bay now:

Such a pity, right? We need to do something about it. Waste management should start from us, from our homes. I hope private factories could invest on Waste Recovery System to lessen the chemicals they emit on the oceans.
It is also very important that factories who do manufacturing, production and fabrication perform something like Solvent Recovery and have a Solvent Recovery System, this will help them save money and time by reducing their reliance on virgin solvent purchasing, disposal services and more.
This is a very little amount compared to what they can do for the world and for the next generations.

Manong Taxi Driver

For a carless mom like me, commuting when the little girl is with me is such a pain. She would complain A LOT when I let her walk and transfer from jeep to jeep, bus, MRT/LRT. Nakakahiya din minsan because you will hear her shriek with “Oh my, it is so hot here Mom!” or “Can’t we just take a taxi?” or “I am so tired of walking!”. This is the bad side of not having a yaya, the kid will tag along with you wherever you go – but I am not complaining. I love to be with her and I would often choose ‘lakads’ that are kid-friendly. I would often decline invitations if no kids are allowed. It’s just that, when we commute, magastos talaga!

Now back to the topic, when the little girl is with me, we would often take taxis or cabs, whatever you call it. My usual P7 – P10 one route fare would become P100 (tip included, as they will NOT give back any change. sad no?) In this journey, I already encountered a lot of tusong taxi drivers:
  • Sira ang metro. therefore, pakyawan. Damn you.
  • Akala mo PromDi, yun pala mali! A taxi driver who picked us up in Megamall do not know where Tiendesitas is. Naman manong, it’s in the vicinity lang! Ginagago niyo na ako eh. They do this for several reasons but the common ones are: tumaas yung fare or magbigay ka ng tip for their HELP. That’s BS!
  • Walang barya or walang pang-sukli. Enough said.
  • The deadma driver. We onced experienced being caught in the rain. I hailed a cab but the driver said no when I told him that we are bound for MOA :( Di na naawa sa amin!
  • TAKUSA (takot sa asawa) – drivers under this kind would often tell you “Pauwi na ako eh!” I’m sure everybody already experienced this.
…and a lot, lot more. These kind of drivers should be reported to LTFRB but unfortunately, no one answers their hotline. Damn.
But I never new there were good kind of taxi drivers, the ones who are willing to go the extra mile to please their passengers. I encountered two of them last Thursday.
The first one braved the sudden floods and even got off the cab to open the umbrella for us. He did it with a smile and without any complaints. He got an additional P50 from me ;-)
The second one was kind enough to tell me “Naku ma’am uwian na po, mahihirapan po kayo sa MRT. May bata pa kayong dala. May bus po dito sa may Alimall papuntang Cavite, mas kumportable po.” It was the best decision I’ve made, to ride the bus home instead of taking MRT + van ride.
These are the kind of drivers who deserves our tip.
