Test your Endurance in “The North Face 100″

I am willing to run outdoors to shed off my extra pounds – believe me, I only need time and yes, discipline. In fact, I have registered for some fun run scheduled in the coming months and will buy the perfect running shoes for those running events. I will start with fun runs first and who knows, I might be able to join the guys in a more challenging trail running event in the future.

This year, The North Face 100 brings Asia’s 1st Trail Running Ultra Marathon Series to Baguio-Benguet – the Summer Capital of the Philippines! For runners and outdoor enthusiasts out there, harder trails and cooler places are better – making Baguio City the perfect place for this event!

On April 24-25, 2010, join the elite athletes and aspiring individuals and define your personal limits as well in gnarly paths, knife ridges, and treacherous mountain trails amidst the cool breeze and pine scent of the Baguio City.

  • Camp John Hay
  • PMA grounds

Earth Hour 2010: We turned the lights off!

For two straight years, our whole family has been joining Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is organized by WWF and is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

Last year it took me a while to explain to Yona Earth Hour’s importance, she was just 3 back then. But now she knows better and even initiated the lighting of the candles when we turned off our lights.

It’s just so sad that there were a few families from our community who did their share. I don’t know if it’s lack of awareness or they simply just don’t care.

Worried that your kids will be bored?

There are so much to do while the lights are off. This is an opportunity for us parents to show our kids that we can do so much even without the use electricity.

I grew up in the province where black outs are inevitable. I look back and realize that nights without lights thrilled me more because there were so much to do!

  • Stargazing – As as child, I knew that the stars shine brighter when the lights are off. Tatay taught me about Astronomy when I was just a kid. Now this is a good chance to teach our kids about constellations and bits and pieces about whats out there.
  • Catching fireflies – I wondered if I can still find fireflies here to show my little girl. This one was my favorite!
  • “Moon, follow me!” – I love it when the moon follows me wherever I go – even now :)
  • Patintero – I never got the chance to do this because my grandparents were so strict but my friends said that they enjoyed playing this game before.
  • Shadow play – This I love! Can you make a dog, a tiger, a dove, a bird and a snake with your shadow?
  • Story telling – Oh please spare your kids the horror stories! It would do them no good :( Tell better ones and let them use their imagination.

Care to share the things you do when the lights are off? Feel free to post them here!

Thanks :)

Much love, Entrepremom

Elextrolux Launches New Additions to its Cooling Line

I grew up with Elextrolux products on our kitchen – from mixers to refrigerators. I can still remember my grandmother and how she dutifully cleans and maintains her Electrolux vacuum cleaner which was huge and noisy! Our house was built in the Spanish era so it didn’t need any vacuum cleaners but for the love of Electrolux and since all of her friends bought one for their houses – my nanay has to get one, too! She has everything the Mr. Electrolux has to offer, and yes, I can still remember their famous jingle “I’m gonna knock on your door, ring on your bell, tap on your windows too!”

Now Electrolux is back sans the jingle and advertising strategies like any insurance advertising. The company welcomes summer and two new additions to its cooling line as it hosted its first ever Midsummer Festival at the Edsa Shangrila Hotel.

The new Electrolux refrigerator offers market freshness for food even in the heat of the summer, perfect for us Filipinos who love great meals.

Small Refrigerator Twilight Silver

Product Features:

  • Active Deo Fresh system that absorbs stray odors
  • Multi-air Flow Cooling System that maintains a constant temperature inside the refrigerator, and
  • Humidity control that helps keep vegetables from wilting
On the other hand, the new split-type air conditioner from Electolux goes beyond cooling by addressing the need for purer, cleaner air in an increasingly polluted, urban environment.
Product Features:
  • Bio HEPA filter that removes over 95% of bacteria and 99% of dust particles
  • Active Plasma Filtration system which reduces the incidence of allergies, asthma and common colds by guarding 99% of airborne allergens, 95% of harmful bacteria and 85% of viruses, and
  • Vitamin C technology which helps soften skin, reduce stress, inhibit bacteria and combat free radicals which cause cell damage.

These products will surely keep us refreshed in so many ways. Pure and cool air and fresh food from these new products will go along way to make this summer more comfortable and enjoyable.

My Picky Eater and her Love for Sauce-less Pasta

Yona is like any other kid – she babbles a lot, throws a fit sometimes, super sweet, bolera and a picky eater. I find it very hard to feed her and most of the time I am putting the blame on Gerber. I was told before that I shouldn’t be feeding her Gerber because she’d be a picky eater when she gets older, I didn’t listen.

I couldn’t even believe myself why I forced her into eating a bottle of 50% fruit and 50% fillers (water, sugar and modified starch) when she can have it in an all-natural, 100% fruit. I remember she loves the banana variety. Should I have known that each bottle only has 50% banana, I should have given her mashed banana na lang.

Gerber’s taste is very strong, really strong that I feel like eating a spoonful of MSG when I tasted it. Instead of acquiring the said taste and loving food with strong flavors, Yona now prefers food with bland taste. She seldom eats rice but prefers pasta without sauce. Yes, without red or white sauce – just the noodles. This is how she eats her pasta.

Yes, that’s pasta with CHEESE. She loves both to bits!

and the sauce should be on a separate container…

She also eats macaroni without sauce and I cook it without adding salt on it. It’s just plain, boiled macaroni. She can have it all day, every single day. No wonder she’s not on the heavy side, but she’s not malnourished naman. Just right. With her built, I wonder if she would ever step on a treadmill when she gets older.

4 year and 6 months old (female) child who is 29.75 pounds and is 3 feet and 2.25 inches tall has a body mass index of 14.3, which is at the 21th percentile, and would indicate that your child is at a healthy weight.

I am not a bit worried about her weight because she is one healthy child. She seldom gets sick and if she ever does, it’s all because of too much chocolate (aka tonsillitis!).

Baby Sling Recall: Baby Wearing is Not for Everyone

As a Multiply seller and buyer, browsing stores is one of those tasks that I would never get tired of doing. It’s like doing window shopping online – a total stress reliever, I must say.

In Multiply, you’ll see a lot of uncommon stuff, the ones that you wouldn’t find in typical malls. Most of the things sold here are imported from abroad at very reasonable prices. This is the reason why more and more people are getting hooked to online buying. Not to mention the convenience of online buying, you fill-out out a form, you pay and the item will be delivered to you right at your doorstep! And yes, by ‘uncommon stuff’ you’ll get questions like “It’s so nice, where did you get that?” and boy, it feels good to say “It’s not available in malls, I bought it online!” Di ba sikat? (I am so proud to say that I am past my online splurging days!)

One of these ‘uncommon stuff’ that intrigues me is the BABY SLING. More and more people are becoming ‘baby wearers’ and it has become a trend. Why not? Celebrities are doing it, popular people are using it, so the whole population has to know about it, right? It’s like becoming the new ‘in’ thing in the mommy community.

Babywearing is the practice of wearing or carrying a baby or child in a sling or other form of carrier. Babywearing is far from new and has been practised for centuries around the world. In the industrialized world, babywearing has gained popularity in recent decades, partly under influence of advocates of attachment parenting; however, not all parents who babywear consider themselves attachment parents. Babywearing is a form of baby transport.

To know more about the benefits, click here.

I have always wondered how the baby feels, especially the teeny-tiny ones inside. “Isn’t it too hot?”, “Can they still breathe?” and “Can they still move inside?” are just  few of my MANY questions on baby slings.

Then I saw this news about grieving mothers blame baby slings for infant deaths. Over 1 million of Infantino “SlingRider” and the “Wendy Bellissimo” baby slings were recalled by CPSC. Like most products sold in the US, these two went through rigorous testings to ensure that they are safe to use. In its warning, CPSC said that slings can pose a suffocation hazard depending on how the tot is positioned.

While the recalled baby slings may not be the same as the ones being sold here (the ring-type baby slings), still, CAUTION has to be taken when using these products, or any other product there is.

I have nothing against these baby slings but as a word of caution to fellow mommies, know the product first before buying it.

Try it out before making that purchase. Some of these multiply sellers join bazaars so it’s a good chance for you to try the sling first.

What’s great for others may not be great for you.

The Cheap, Delicious, and Hot JUNK FOOD

Busy house-help-less moms like me rely on 8-7000 (Jollibee) and 8-6236 (McDonalds) deliveries whenever I am loaded with work and we have nothing to prepare at home. These fast food chains are also doing business anywhere, everywhere so they’re all very accessible.

My health conscious friends already warned me about this and how I should refrain from bringing Yona to fast foods because saturated and trans fat will do no good to our health, but heck, why not? Fast food is cheap, delicious and served hot – and yes, it comes with a FREE TOY!

Fast food is happiness to me until I saw this video. So my question now, would you still eat burgers and fries after watching this video?

I can’t believe I am letting my child eat cheap, delicious, hot JUNK FOOD-  and yes, it’s the junk that comes with a FREE TOY. We shouldn’t wonder why despite the many diet supplements around, more and more people are going obese.

It’s FINAL! We’re Running!

After knowing the details of National Geographic Channel’s Earth Day Run 2010 and its beneficiary, Design Against the Elements (DAtE), I and the hubby has finally decided to register for the event.

We are running not just because we wanted to start a healthy and fit lifestyle (running, of course, is a natural fat burner, it is so far the best regimen for dropping pounds) but because we were inspired by DAtE‘s initiative in making a difference.

Why wait for another Ondoy before expressing our concern? We can act NOW and  make pre-calamity actions such as supporting and spreading the news about DAtE’s Design Competition.

Designs Against the Elements is an opportunity to showcase how green building can help alleviate poverty and protect households against disasters, providing the winning formula for communities that can survive economic, social, and environmental challenges.
Design against the ElementsHere are some tips in preparation for running  events:

  1. Visit your doctor – A visit to your doctor before engaging in any physical activity such as running is very important especially for first timers, like us!
  2. Find the essential gears – Invest in a good pair of running shoes and running outfit.
  3. Plan your running trail – For starters, find an easy trail. Start with a nearby park with low vehicle traffic and has shady areas.
  4. Stretch – Stretching is very important for runners, and it should be done before and after the event.
