Looking back, I wonder how I survived after years and years of the dreaded dysmenorrhea. “Abdominal pains” was the frequent reason on my excuse slips/letters when I was younger — because back then, I couldn’t even get up during red days!
...then some wizards arrived, delivered my eldest to my arms and magically, the menstrual cramps were gone… or so I thought.
My periods have been pain-free the past 11 years. Yes, the mood swings are still there but no more pains — don’t say hurray just yet because two months ago I felt that it’s all coming back — gushing blood, extreme mood swings, mentrual cramps and all! Dang!
I got so bothered so I Googled periods and being 35 LOL Here’s what I found:
In our 30s, we should:
- Expect unpredictable cycle because of hormonal changes.
- Frequent, heavier and longer bleeding. Say 6 to 7 days.
This is because the hormone system is starting to misfire (how cruel is that!!!). Your production of both progesterone and estrogen will start to become predictable therefore affecting the way it sends messages to your brain.
THEN, HERE COMES JEUNESSE!
If you are 35 like me, then let us both welcome the wonders of Jeunesse into our lives. Who knows, she might be our new best friend!
While monthly period is a reminder of every woman’s wonderful gift of life-‐giving ability, red flag days can impede mood and performance, especially when painful menstrual cramps take a toll on you. During menstruation, the excessive level of hormone prostaglandin makes uterus squeeze really hard and arteries get blocked, thus, causing the pain.
So during your time of the month aside from a warm bath, exercise, a diet high in calcium and antioxidants, tap into the pain reducing abilities of anion. Also known as negative ions which are naturally found in lighting, ocean surf, waterfalls, and mountain air among other sources, research shows that it also improves alertness and relaxes people who are in severe pain. – source
