“Huwag Balewalain ang Balisawsaw, baka UTI na yan!”
Balisawsaw (Frequent urination, or urinary frequency) is the need to urinate more often than usual. As a woman, I usually shrug this off knowing that it would eventually go away.
But do you know that balisawsaw could be a sign of urinary tract infection? I didn’t know that until I attended the first ever International Scientific Symposium on UTI 3 days ago.
👉 Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of your urinary system: ureters, urethra, bladder, and kidneys.
👉 1 our of 5 women suffer from UTI and 80% of them suffer from recurrent infection.
👉 80 to 90% of this infection is caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), a type of bacteria commonly found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
Symptoms of UTI
😖 A burning feeling when you urinate
😖 A frequent or intense urge to urinate, even though little comes out when you do
😖 Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen
😖 Cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling urine
😖 Feeling tired or shaky
😖 Fever or chills (a sign the infection may have reached your kidneys)
Urinary Tract Infection is very common among women but there are also men who suffer from this though it is not just that common, while others have this because of their weak immune system or they are battling diabetes. Kidney stones or an enlarged prostate can trap urine in the bladder and increase the risk of UTIs so when a person has this, his chances of having the infection is high. People who also use catheter has a huge chance of getting UTI.
If you think that you have UTI, consult your doctor immediately.
How to Prevent UTI
👉 Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water
👉 Urinate when you need to
👉 Wipe from front to back
👉 Urinate before sex and promptly after
